What Is A Butterfly Awning?

Yellow Markilux Syncra

The term 'Butterfly Awning' refers to a system that has a free standing awning protection system made of a strong aluminium goal post framework with retractable awnings on either side. Whilst they are often utilised for commercial use, they are also suitable for domestic use.

Commercially, butterfly awnings are often required to protect people underneath from both the rain and sunshine. Because of this, the Markilux Syncra is a great solution, as unlike many other butterfly awnings it has the strength and stability to survive not just the sunshine, but also wet and windy conditions.

Manufactured and tested in Germany, which suffers from a similarly diverse and challenging climate, the Syncra is a perfect solution when looking for a butterfly awning capable of providing serious all year round protection whilst dealing with the UK's variable conditions.

The Markilux Syncra system is built from a sturdy, powerful galvanised steel box section framework that has been CE approved, available as both one piece up to seven metres wide, or as a coupled system up to 13.9m wide. The ability to couple awning systems only increases the huge potential, with four systems capable of granting up to 111 metres of protection.

The free-standing awning stand contains two steel posts at either side and a steel cross member, and contains no centre post like giant umbrellas, reducing annoyance. It also offers plenty of space, with a maximum height of three metres and a walk-under height of over two metres at the sides. The system is also hugely diverse, with seven different awning models available from the Markilux range, which suit different tastes and requirements. Lighting is available to add an elegant touch, or there are the smaller systems for those with limited space; the possibilities are incredible.

All of the awnings are equipped with the gear mechanism and a stylish stainless steel winding handle, with an electric motor available as an option. The awning stand is powder coated and contains a top profile that matches the colour frame of the awning. Alongside this, the mechanism and its cover are protected by a totally enclosed housing and top profile.

Available with a variety of Markilux awnings for the framework, you can choose from an open, semi, or full cassette, all of which are available as manually or electrically operated, with a wide range of fabrics including waterproofed and fire retardant options for public places.

The awnings themselves act independently, allowing you to extend one whilst keeping the other fully retracted if required, making this a particularly adaptable awning that enables you to change the level of protection and shading as needed.

The Syncra also has a broad range of accessories which can be added to the framework. Lighting and infrared heating systems allow extended use of the systems during the evening, and the additional warmth provided extends the ability to offer an al fresco dining experience later into the night, or in months further out of the summer period.

Drop down valances, operating manually or electrically, can also be specified to offer further protection from the sides, and alongside this, we also supply side sections fixed with either glazed or solid sections that provide added protection and encourage further use of the area.

Samson Awnings do also offer the fantastic Weinor Duofix butterfly awning system or the Terrasol system from Winsol awnings, but the Terrasol is only utilised for sun protection and is therefore not suitable for all year coverage or protection in wet and windy conditions.

The Markilux Syncra can also be concreted or surface fixed to the ground, as well as having the option for weighted sections that can be adapted to make additional seating or even a decorative area. We do recommend permanent fixing however, for the ideal levels of stability all year round.
